What does a FULL status mean?

When the parking capacity at the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center reaches its absolute limit, Olympic National Park ranger staff must temporarily close the access road at the Heart O' the Hills entrance gate. This protocol is vital to maintain safety on the 17-mile mountain highway, protect delicate subalpine environments, and prevent dangerous overcrowding at the visitor center parking areas.

During peak tourist seasons—especially in summer and winter ski weekends—the status changes frequently. A "FULL" notification means that new vehicles will not be allowed past the lower toll gate until a sufficient number of vehicles exit the area. This is managed on a "one-in, one-out" basis, which can result in wait times at the gate exceeding one hour. We highly recommend waiting out the congestion at alternative scenic spots, or planning your ascent for early morning or late afternoon.

Plan B: The Gate is Closed. Now What?

If Hurricane Ridge is currently at capacity or fully closed, don't let it ruin your trip! Olympic National Park has countless breathtaking spots nearby. Here are three local alternatives you can explore right now:

  • 1. Lake Crescent

Located 18 miles west of Port Angeles, this stunning, deep glacier-carved lake offers pristine blue waters. You can walk the Spruce Railroad Trail along the north shore, rent a kayak, or enjoy a meal on the porch at the historic Lake Crescent Lodge.

  • 2. Marymere Falls

A fantastic and accessible hike starting from the Storm King Ranger Station near Lake Crescent. This 1.8-mile round-trip trail leads you through a lush, old-growth temperate rainforest across scenic wooden bridges to a beautiful 90-foot waterfall.

  • 3. Dungeness Spit

Located near Sequim, about 30 minutes east of Port Angeles, Dungeness Spit is the longest natural sand spit in the United States. Walk along the beach to the historic lighthouse, watch marine wildlife, and view the gorgeous Olympic Mountains from sea level.
